Hanes Hummus was officially established by Yohannes Petros in 2009 from his small home kitchen in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. However, the story of Hanes Hummus’s beginnings go back a decade to his time living in Vancouver, BC. As with all fruits borne from a labour of love, Hanes Hummus is the classic example of a company that became a business despite never intending to become one. Since Hanes Hummus’ early "customers" were friends and family, Yohannes was driven to produce hummus that retained health and freshness as its primary goal. His recipes were based on fresh ingredients he sourced from local Vancouver farmer’s markets and perfected over ten years of slow and deliberate experimentation. Though his friends heaped constant praise for his hummus and suggested he make his hummus available to a wider public, he never took the recommendations seriously. He continued to make his classic recipe available only to those friends and family who entered his home.
